I have been a member of the Powell River Brain Injury Society for the past 23 years. I had a bad car crash in 2002. I had been going to the monthly support group meetings, then in 2003, the society opened a 5 day per week drop-in centre. I was so happy to have a place where people understood me and what I was going through. I got help with socializing, because I was definitely isolating myself after my injury. They taught me that it is ok to feel what I was feeling and that my peers were going through very similar things. I was having issues with my voice, and I was taught some techniques to help me, through the music therapy program. I was encouraged to unlock my creative side through the creative expressions art therapy group. We eventually moved to a place where we could plant a garden, and I was very happy to sit out there and watch things grow and bloom. Eating our fresh vegetables, fruits and berries has been an awesome experience. We are so lucky to have a place like this to come to. I love my brain injury family.
