Heads Up Crew Concussion Education Program

Our “Heads Up Crew” offers a fun and interactive 90-minute learning experience for Grade 4 and 5 students. The program is designed to educate children on the brain, how it works, and how it can be injured. With support from the Province of BC and Powell River & District United Way, we bring this vital educational program to schools across our region.

Program Details

The Brain And How It Works

Students will learn what the brain is made of and how it functions. This includes understanding how different parts of the brain control actions, thoughts, and movements.

What Happens When The Brain Is Injured

We explain how brain injuries can occur and the impact they can have on a person's life. Students will learn about the common impairments that follow a brain injury.

Personal Stories

People living with the effects of brain injuries will share their personal experiences, providing students with a real-world perspective on how brain injuries can change lives.

Brain Injury Simulation

Students will participate in a brain injury simulation to understand what it feels like for someone living with a brain injury. This hands-on approach helps them empathize with those who have experienced it.

Safety Measures

The program emphasizes safety practices that help prevent brain injuries. Students will understand how these measures help reduce the risk of brain injury.

Interactive Demos & Educational Videos

Students will engage with hands-on activities such as a “Jello brain” and “cantaloupe helmet.” We have age-appropriate videos showcasing brain injury prevention.

Why It’s Important

This program is part of our larger effort to raise awareness about brain injury prevention. Through our School Education Program, we aim to empower students with the knowledge to protect themselves and others from brain injuries. This is especially important in activities such as sports, cycling, and other recreational activities, where the risk of head injury is higher.

Program Impact

Throughout the month of June (Brain Injury Prevention and Awareness Month in BC), we run special programs in schools to promote brain injury awareness and safety. These efforts are part of our broader commitment to reducing brain injuries in our community by educating the next generation on safety and prevention.
