Powell River Brain Injury Society
2010 Walk ~ Ride ~ Run
101 ~ Marathon
For Brain Injury Awareness
and Prevention
Saturday June 12, 2010
This event is a fun and fitness activity for people of all ages and abilities who want to help raise funds while reaching for their personal best distance. People will set realistic goals and distances based on their abilities and the 55 Kilometer route will be marked out in 5 kilometer sections with registration checkpoints at each section. Fruit and drinks will be provided at each 5 kilometer checkpoint and all participants will receive a certificate of participation.
The SOCIAL Kilometer is an accessible route on the sidewalks of Marine Avenue between Alberni and Wharf Streets. This is a safe for all section of the route for wheelchairs, walkers, scooters and strollers.
Our goal is to raise program funds and awareness about the need for brain injury prevention. With your help we will make this a successful event. The more contributions you raise, the more successful we’ll be at achieving our goal. Thank you very much for your participation!
Rules
- Participants may start collecting pledges as soon as they get their pledge forms. Reminder: Pledge sheets and money need to be turned in on or before event day, Saturday, June 12, 2010. You can bring them to the Society Office next to Paperworks at 4741 Marine Ave or come and register at any one of the checkpoints along the route before you begin. Checkpoints are every 5 kilometers from Lund to Saltery Bay…but see the start time section so you don’t come late and miss the chance to walk with others.
- Pledges may be made by anyone. Ask your friends and family and neighbours and local businesses to sponsor you for the event. You can walk, ride your bike or run. You are part of a very special event.
- Each sponsor making a pledge should write his or her own name, address and amount of pledge. Participants should collect the pledge in advance but must keep pledges until all are collected and the sheet is turned in to the Society with your pledge money.
- START TIMES: On event day, each participant will walk only as far as he/she is able. Runners will start at 5am at the Lund Hotel and we will have sponsors for you at each checkpoint for fruit/cookies and power drinks – pick up and drop off service is available. Walkers will start between 5am and 9 am from Lund: the last group will leave Lund at 9am…please don’t be late. Cyclists will leave as per the walkers and will be given a bag with fruit and drinks for the way so they can travel at their own speed. PLEASE NOTE: The last registration for Lund will be at 8:30am…please be there before then. You will be given a ride back to your vehicle when you are done your portion of the event. We encourage you to get a group together and car pool.
- Upon completion of the event there will be a final checkpoint station at Saltery Bay. A volunteer will record each participant’s name and address and we will mail your certificate to you. Please remember to return pledge sheets with the money to your checkpoint BEFORE you begin your journey or bring them to the Society office on Marine Avenue before June 12. 6. Participants are encouraged to wear hats and sunscreen if it’s sunny or bring rain gear if it’s rainy.
We look forward to all our participants having a great time! For questions or concerns, or to volunteer, call Debbie, Catherine or Donna at 604-485-6065.
